From the Brazilian Amazon to India

A flavor that connects biodiversity and culture. Truly Brazilian. In Brazil, it's called açaí. In India, you'll often hear it pronounced as acai or akai.

Born in the Brazilian Amazon, açaí has travelled from a local food tradition to bowls, smoothies and creative recipes around the world.

Now it's your turn to discover it.

What does açaí tastes like?

Açaí is not naturally very sweet. Its flavour is fruity, gently tart and subtly earthy, with a rich, creamy texture when blended.

And that's what makes it so versatile. Pair it with mango or banana for sweetness. Add coconut, cashews or pistachios for texture. Try it with dates or even a touch of cardamom.

Chef Rakhee Vaswani whisking açaí in a bowl

“ Fusion is all about bringing different food cultures together while allowing each ingredient to shine. Brazilian açaí is vibrant, versatile and has so much more potential than just smoothie or breakfast bowls. I love exploring how we can incorporate it into Indian cuisine through chutneys, chaats, dips, dressings and contemporary interpretations of traditional favourites.

For this modern Açaí Tokri Chaat, I wanted to bring together the familiar flavours of Indian chaat the tanginess of imli, the freshness of green chutney, the warmth of spices and the crunch of sev with the unique berry-like notes and vibrant colour of Brazilian açaí. It is a fun way to take an ingredient from another part of the world and give it a new expression in Indian cooking. For me, that is the beauty of fusion: taking something familiar and reimagining it in an exciting, unexpected way. ”
